Meet the team

Experienced and committed

All First Star staff are seasoned professionals with deep roots in education, youth development and leadership. Their collective experience spans classrooms, care settings, and strategic roles ensuring every scholar is supported by someone who truly understands their journey. Working alongside educators, social workers, and carers to build joined-up support, our team brings both expertise and heart to everything they do.

Baroness Floella is a celebrated broadcaster, author, and life peer in the House of Lords. As our
patron, she brings decades of advocacy for children’s rights, diversity, and education. Her warmth
and wisdom continue to inspire young people to believe in themselves and their potential.

Peter Samuelson is the founder of First Star Scholars and a long-time champion for young
people. Based in Los Angeles, he brings creative insight from his work as an author and film
producer, helping shape the vision and values behind the programme.

Robert is Chair of Governors at First Star Scholars UK, with a background in teaching and school
leadership. He’s passionate about widening opportunity and helping care-experienced young
people build belief in their futures.

Richard Donnelly brings deep financial expertise and a steady hand to his role as Treasurer of the First Star Scholars UK Board of Trustees. With a background in strategic oversight and nonprofit governance, he ensures our resources are managed transparently and sustainably.

Martin brings strategic insight and cross-sector experience to his role as Ambassador of First Star Scholars UK. A former Head of Science in Inner London schools, he later led corporate development in global space and defence markets. Martin was instrumental in introducing First Star to the UK.

Diarmuid is an experienced school leader and education advocate, passionate about helping
young people succeed. He’s especially committed to supporting care-experienced students and creating environments where all can thrive.

Diarmuid is also the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Emily is a nationally recognised educator and advocate for inclusion, currently Headteacher of a
SEND school and Director of a SEND CIC. Her personal journey and professional leadership
drive her commitment to social mobility and educational opportunity.

Ian has dedicated his career to education and care, leading schools and colleges through transformative change. A safeguarding expert with a passion for outdoor residentials, he ensures young people feel safe, supported and inspired by every experience.

Ian is the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Theresa has over 20 years’ teaching experience, in addition to extensive voluntary work within youth organisations. She is passionate about using person-centred, trauma-informed practice to support young people to overcome barriers, build confidence, and achieve successful outcomes.

Rob has over 20 years of experience in schools, he is passionate about mentoring and coaching learners to build confidence and reach their full potential. Rob’s commitment to creating positive, inclusive learning environments ensures that every student feels valued, supported, and inspired to achieve.

Becky brings warmth and experience from years in youth work and wider charity projects. She’s
passionate about creating inclusive spaces where young people feel safe, supported, and
empowered to be themselves.

Lilly is a dedicated youth worker known for her friendly, approachable style and commitment to
making every residential feel welcoming. She’s always ready to listen, guide, and help young
people feel at ease.
